Some insight on what & why Nigella Sativa!
When I find a product that makes me feel so good in my body, I am going to share it here of course. With my favourite people in the world.
A couple of years ago someone suggested I take Black seed oil. It comes in an amber bottle in liquid form, and has a very pungent fragrance and taste. Almost overwhelming. The health benefits it touted were incredible so I decided that it would be worth the propertied benefits. Each day I would take a deep breath, prepare myself and take the spoon of oil twice a day. It was not my favourite.
I finished 1 bottle and never purchased another. I couldn't bring myself to do it. The sensory overload each morning and night outweighed the health benefits I was yet to discover. So with a mild sense of joy, I stopped taking it.
Nigella Sativa is also known as Black seed oil, it is pressed from the seeds of a flowering shrub, Nigella sativa. The plant is packed with thymoquinone, a compound which may have cancer-fighting powers. The plant is native to western Asia where it grows both wild and is cultivated. It is also cultivated in India, Egypt and the Middle East.
The Black seed has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of diseases and ailments and is one of the few ancient remedies that is backed by scientific research.
The history of Black seed oil dates to ancient times, where it was revered by civilizations in both the East and West. Black seed has even been mentioned in ancient texts and has been found in the tombs of Pharaohs. For hundreds of years, Black seed oil has been used to help maintain the health and well-being of many civilizations, however it wasn’t until recently that science entered the picture and discovered why Black seed oil is such a panacea for maintaining health and treating a large range of illnesses.
Black seed oil it is claimed is beneficial to:
- Allergy management
- Hair and skin support
- Blood sugar regulation
- Respiratory health
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Immune support
Naturally, the quality of the oil depends on the purity and potency of the Black seeds from which it is pressed. So like all products there are some key points to consider when purchasing your Black seed oil, these are:tu
- A company that only uses the highest quality, non-GMO, organically-grown, pesticide and non-irradiated Nigella Sativa seeds.
- A Black seed product that is listed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia (TGA).
- Product that is manufactured to Australian Standards.
- Products that contain pure, natural and organic ingredients.
Black seed oil is 10 to 15 times more expensive than other edible oils on the market and this, unfortunately, can led to products being diluted with cheaper oils to increase profit. Be sure to speak with someone about the adulteration of the oil prior to purchase or double check that the brand you have is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia ( TGA ).
Check that the brand of Black seed oil you are choosing is derived from the Black seed using the cold-pressed method. Meaning that no heat or chemicals are used in extracting the oil from the seed – ensuring that the constituents of the Black seed remain untouched and unaltered.
Thymoquinone has been identified as the main active constituent of the Black seed and has been found to possess excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
