Life's biggest gift and yet we falter, stumble and suffer because of it.
When you read about surrendering, letting go, falling away, all of those terms that we swoon over because they feel like we are able to release all ownership, responsibility, and adulthood to the wonders of the universe or just someone else even for a minute so we can have a moment to breathe.
These words almost or even sometimes feel soothing depending on how, where, and when they arrive in your life.
There isn't a conversation about life that I have had that doesn't go something like " oh well nothing lasts forever".. We know our entire world ebbs and flows with impermanence it's only constant.
So why do we create suffering for ourselves when impermanence shows up in our lives?
Regret, sorrow, surrendering, letting go, falling away, and goodbye suddenly feels hard, hurtful, and cold.
We fight hard against remembering that impermanence is our greatest gift, it is this fight that creates so much suffering. The resistance is however futile to the current of life.
My two favorite four-letter words Love and Yoga intertwine so beautifully to teach us this lesson every time we come to the mat. Every time we consciously breathe. One of the fundamental lessons of Yoga is impermanence. This lesson feels most clear when we are in asana. We start by easing our bodies into a posture, taking our limbs as far as we can until we meet our boundary - the edge of where we have known as our limit which could with one small movement or breath become the edge of a newness that we can explore or experience if we are ready to feel that growth.
It is here at the edge in exploration and growth that we feel the breath of impermanence on the back of our necks, holding or playing the edge, challenging the status quo we keep ourselves so comfortably in. The ebb and flow we intentionally stop to halt any change in what it is we feel or know to be our day to day lives.
Yoga will incrementally teach you that impermanence is really the greatest gift of life, that being able to explore and experience new parts of ourselves regardless of that being in asana or meditation will take you into the unknown and allow you to feel more ease and acceptance with all that comes and goes in you and the world around you.
You may not notice it at first. Holding tightly to the grip of the boundaries that you have created for yourself. Over time, during the work on the mat, you will start to feel it. More ease in asana, time will slow at the mat, your breath will lengthen, you will feel more of yourself and less of the outside, you will feel the change you have created in within. That beautiful heart, is impermanence, life's greatest gift.
Does it make it easier to find acceptance, to let go, surrender, fall away or say goodbye? No, it does, however, prepare you for when hard things happen. In your hardest moments, it will comfort you to know that in time, you will again find yourself exploring, experiencing, and playing your edge to meet the newness of what life has to offer.
